About this Toolkit

The School Nurse Leadership Toolkit was developed as an extension of the Becoming the Professional School Nurse Series, created through my DNP project at the University of Colorado Anschutz. This toolkit provides actionable resources—leadership guides, templates, reflection tools, and data worksheets—to strengthen confidence and competence in school nursing practice. These materials are designed to help you lead with Service, Leadership, and Equity, and to continue building momentum long after the series ends.

This LACOE resource defines what tasks can be performed by:

Delegation rules
- California Nursing Practice Act (Business & Professions Code § 2725)
  - Defines what tasks RNs may delegate to unlicensed assistive personnel.
  - Key principles:
  - UAP cannot perform assessments
  - UAP cannot make clinical judgments
  - RNs may delegate selected tasks, not nursing process
  - School nurses retain legal responsibility for delegation decisions
